Burakugaku (Buraku Study): a New Paradigm for Education

Citation

One domain of burakugaku is to examine the role of burakumin's cultural traditions, particularly their occupational roles (yaku) for creating and maintaining some of the basic functions of the large cultural and religious systems of Japanese society.

While much is discussed concerning the "untouchability" of burakumin status, for the jobs they engaged were considered polluting, little is documented with one exception in the recent burakumin literature about the roles senmin played to purify and sanctify the defiled materials so as to "recycle" them into pure, useful, living, and even sacred substances.
Below are three such examples.

For example, the report complied by danzaemon, the governor of all senmin in the nation, to Shogun during the years 1715 to 1736 summarizes the following as the basic duties (yakume) of senmin: processing of leathers and enforcing of laws and punishment of criminals (Nakao, 1994).

Despite the taboo assigned to these labors, animal corpses produced many useful and valued items.Dried meat and organs were used as fertilizers as well as adhesives called nikawa which were then used for painting.

Some organs, such as the gall bladder, were used for prescribing medicine. The leather was often used to produce various musical instruments. The cat skin was used to produce shamisen, a traditional string instrument;the cow skin was used to make taiko, a drum.In many, instances, these instruments were often used for religious purification purposes such as for a purification rite in a Shinto shrine.
In addition, senmin was assigned the role of a shrine's janitor, of cleaning and purifying it for various religious ceremonies.

Other occupational functions performed by senmin were several "criminal justice" roles: "mountain guard" (yamaban), looking for thieves and animals that tampered with crops;"water guard" (mizuban), ensuring that every farmer had a fair share of water in his rice field;"fire guard" (hinoban);regular police work of arresting and executing criminals as well as burying their bodies (undertakers).

These various police works were also considered unclean because they, too, required being in contact with the defiled materials and other disrupters of normative human activities. In short, much of senmin's work involved turning something lifeless (in case of dealing with the dead or defiled objects) or life-threatening (in case of their "criminal justice roles) into something living and life-supporting.

The Burakumin people, at the bottom of the Japanese food chain Posted onJuly 4, 2013 by tokiotours

Burakumin ( 部落民 , “hamlet people”/”village people”) is an outcaste group at the bottom of the Japanese social order that has historically been the victim of severe discrimination and ostracism.

They were originally members of outcaste communities in the Japanese feudal era , composed of those with occupations considered impure or tainted by death (such as executioners, undertakers, workers in slaughterhouses, butchers or tanners), which have severe social stigmas of kegare (穢れ or “defilement”) attached to them or people who had been taken prisoner in one of the many wars waged throughout Japan .

Traditionally, the Burakumin lived in their own hamlets or ghettos .This minority group accounts for less than 2% of the population.

According to David E. Kaplan and Alec Dubro in Yakuza: The Explosive Account of Japan’s Criminal Underworld (Reading, Massachusetts: Addison-Wesley Publishing Co., 1986), burakumin account for about 70 percent of the members of Yamaguchi-gumi, the biggest yakuza syndicate in Japan.

Mitsuhiro Suganuma, the ex-member of Public Security Intelligence Agency, testified that burakumin account for about 60 percent of the members of the entire yakuza.

In November 1975, the Osaka branch of the Buraku Liberation League was tipped off about the existence of a book called “A Comprehensive List of Buraku Area Names” (特殊部落地名総鑑 Tokushu Buraku Chimei Sōkan ).

Investigations revealed that copies of the hand-written 330-page book were being secretly sold by an Osaka-based firm to numerous firms and individuals throughout Japan by a mail order service called Cablenet, at between ¥5,000 and ¥50,000 per copy.

The book contained a nationwide list of all the names and locations of buraku settlements (as well as the primary means of employment of their inhabitants), which could be compared against people's addresses to determine if they were buraku residents.

The preface contained the following message: “At this time, we have decided to go against public opinion and create this book [for] personnel managers grappling with employment issues, and families pained by problems with their children's marriages.”

More than 200 large Japanese firms, including (according to the Buraku Liberation and Human Rights Research Centre of Osaka) Toyota , Nissan , Honda and Daihatsu , along with thousands of individuals purchased copies of the book.In 1985, partially in response to the popularity of this book, and an increase in mimoto chōsa (身元調査, private investigation into one's background) the Osaka prefectural government introduced “An Ordinance to Regulate Personal Background Investigation Conducive to Buraku Discrimination”.

Although the production and sale of the book has been banned, numerous copies of it are still in existence, and in 1997, an Osaka private investigation firm was the first to be charged with violation of the 1985 statute for using the text.

Empress Michiko was indeed given a very rough time by the Imperial Palace who didn't like her for her family history, such was the extent of the mental torture that she was put through that she had a breakdown and was unable to speak for a very long time. No, she wasn't from the lowest caste, she would never have been allowed to marry the Emperor if she had been.

@ Golda, there is indeed a caste system in Japan to this very day, consisting of three different castes. Big companies, such as Mitsubishi et al, had what was known as the Black Book, containing all of the names of the lower castes.

It is illegal but, the Japanese Authorities turned a blind eye to it and the companies would only get into trouble if they were found to keep one. Some years ago Mitsubishi was forced to admit to keeping such a book and all hell broke loose but, was brushed over within a matter of weeks. Even the words for the lower castes have been omitted from Japanese dictionaries and can now only be found in the old pre war dictionary and younger people do not know of it until later in life and for some, never.

Many Japanese tried to change their family name in an attempt to bypass the caste system, with very little luck, as the surnames can easily be traced through the family records and their "mon" which is the family's crest and registered with the local government. Any name change can easily be followed.

Edit.........Empress Michiko is a member of the Shoda family, the family runs the huge Nishin flour mill company, they didn't deal in meat or meat products as far as I am aware, although things may have changed now.

The Japanese attitude to meat and animal products has changed somewhat and since WWII, people eat more meat more often. Leather and other animal products are no longer frowned upon and the people that produce them, are no longer frowned upon either, except by the Imperial Household Agency, the real power in Japan.

It was a very long time before the Emperor had the balls to stand up to the people behind the Chrysanthemum Throne and gave them an ultimatum concerning Empress Michiko, they saw the writing on the wall and softened their stance against his wife, She recovered from the breakdown and started making public appearances again but, her voice didn't return for a long time after.

Australian book on royals touches nerve in Japan

A book on the sad saga of Crown Princess Masako by an Australian journalist has touched a nerve in Japan, where tabloids may tease but mainstream media tend to tread lightly when it comes to reporting about royals.

Publisher Kodansha Ltd said on Friday it had scrapped plans for a Japanese edition of "Princess Masako - Prisoner of the Chrysanthemum Throne", prompting author Ben Hills -- who has described his book as "an Oriental Charles and Diana story" -- to complain that the Japanese government had censored his work.

Japan's Foreign Ministry has sought an apology and "appropriate steps" from Hills regarding the book, which it said insulted the royal family and contained many factual errors.

"The Japanese public has the right to read the book and make up its own mind. It's not the job of the Japanese government to suppress it," Hills told Reuters in a telephone interview.

"This is censorship, pure and simple," said Hills, adding he had since been approached by three other Japanese publishers.

Hills said the Japanese government was especially keen to keep a Japanese audience from reading that Masako's only child, 5-year-old Princess Aiko, may have been conceived through in vitro fertilization and that Masako herself was suffering from severe depression, not a mild "adjustment disorder" as described by the Imperial Household Agency, which manages royal affairs.

Japanese tabloids often engage in detailed gossip about royals, especially Masako, a Harvard-educated former diplomat who married Crown Prince Naruhito in 1993 and who many hoped would help modernize the staid imperial family.

"The weeklies put out all sorts of information of dubious certainty mixed with stuff that down the road you find is true," said Kenneth Ruoff, author of a book on the late Emperor Hirohito.

Weekly magazines even speculated last year that divorce might be a option for Masako, who suffers from what the palace has called a mental disorder caused by the stress of coping with rigid royal life. She has been unable to perform most of her official duties for more than three years.

Ruoff said Hills' book broke little fresh ground with regard to Masako's well-reported saga, but agreed the talk of in vitro fertilization might have offended conservative palace officials.

"People feel that there are certain things, when it comes to the royals, that should be left alone," Ruoff said.

"The weeklies in Japan do it anyway, but the more respected media don't usually go down that road."

Miiko Kodama, a professor of mass communications at Musashi University, echoed that view.

"There's still a taboo about the imperial family, and the book touched on that," she said, adding that many ordinary Japanese would see written references to how Aiko was conceived as an invasion of royal privacy.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Mitsuo Sakaba declined to detail what he said were "maybe more than 100 errors" in the book.

He said a letter to Hills and his publisher, Random House, Australia, had stated that the book "contains disrespectful discussions, distortions of fact and judgmental assertions ... pertaining to the birth of Princess Aiko and the physical condition of her Imperial Highness, Crown Princess Masako."

Sakaba said Japan's government was upset at the disrespectful tone of the work as well as its factual errors.

"Freedom of speech should respect certain norms and standards. If you can say anything you like, I don't think that is freedom of speech, and the person who says that should respect others' right to express their views," he said, explaining why the Japanese government had decided to protest.

Masako, now 43, gave birth to Aiko in 2001 after eight years of marriage to Crown Prince Naruhito, who turns 47 on Friday.

Under Japan's males-only imperial succession law, however, Aiko cannot ascend the throne. Plans to revise the law were shelved last year when Masako's royal sister-in-law gave birth to the first imperial male heir in more than 40 years.

The fuss over Hills' book has had one positive result for the author. The work is now the best-selling foreign-language book on Amazon's Japanese Web site, Amazon.co.jp.

Shin Buddhism in Japan supports human rights today because it was forced to come to terms with its own discrimination against burakumin—a Japanese minority that has experienced severe caste-like disadvantage and exclusion based on heredity, occupation, and place of birth.

The majority of burakumin follow Shin Buddhism, in which they have been treated as outcastes, just as they have been within other Buddhist schools and within Japanese society as a whole. Over the course of the twentieth century, buraku advocacy groups pressured the Shin sects to respond to specific doctrinal and structural incidents of discrimination, both contemporary and historical.

One of these sects, the Ōtani-ha, developed its institutional policy on this serious social problem precisely by interacting with buraku advocacy groups, both secular and sectarian, and responding to their specific criticisms. The story of this institutional struggle can be effectively told through the story of one of its priest-bureaucrats, Takeuchi Ryō'on (1891-1967).

Takeuchi, who flourished in the Ōtani-ha administration from the 1920s to the 1950s, worked to alleviate buraku discrimination and put forward a Shin Buddhist theory of social engagement. Takeuchi's story reveals how a Buddhist bureaucrat and his faction—with time, personnel, and money—worked under pressure to create an ethical social policy based on Shin doctrine.

In addition to examining the issue of buraku discrimination, a Shin Buddhist sect, and a member of its "middle management"—topics rarely addressed in English language Buddhist studies—this dissertation performs two important tasks. First, it describes a type of Buddhist ethical thought that is self-consciously historical and concerned with the religious organization, the "order" (kyōdan), as a whole in its actual and ideal aspects. My examination of this type of ethical thought provides a rare but important complement to scriptural, philosophical, and individualistic accounts of Buddhist ethics.

Second, it challenges current scholarly models of Buddhist social engagement, or "socially engaged Buddhism," which tend to neglect the early twentieth century and large, established Buddhist groups. I find social engagement in pre-1945, large, conservative organizations, and not just in post-1960, small-scale, progressive groups. This is because social engagement is a Buddhist response to modernity itself and not tied to a particular modern political ideology.

Is it a coincidence that the Kobe Earthquake and the California Earthquake both occurred on the 17th of January, one in 1994 and one in 1995 and both within about an hour of each other ?

A very strange and interesting scenario is being followed by researcher Harry Mason for Nexus Magazine involving The AUM Shinri Kyo (SUPREME TRUTH) in Japan, (supposedly responsible for the subway (sarin) gas attacks), and Drug Trafficking in Ecstacy and the purchase of a 900 Million Dollar EM (Electromagnetic) Tesla "Earthquake" Machine that is possibly either being tested at this time or maybe even involved in a secret sound-wave-war between powerful drug factions or empires.Apparently, the epicenter of the Kobe Earthquake in 1995 was also the location of a secret Electromagnetics research and manufacturing facility in Japan.
